I plan eventually to build a directory of campgrounds and other places to park a tent.
For now, let me just say that the Bayshore State Park in Green Bay WI sucks. It’s full of Yahoos with guns and unruly kids, and no one cares about the noise.
Annie’s Campground in Tilleda WI is awesome. It’s geared to families but there’s plenty of room to spread out and also two large drowning pools should any kid prove too rowdy.
I stopped at the Tilleda Falls Campground but didn’t stay. That whole thing looked like a scene from ‘Deliverance’. Old ramshackle trailers parked end to end, smoke curling up from the woods, guys gutting fish on the porch….it scared the living shit out of me so I scarpered pronto. Good luck with that one, don’t say you haven’t been warned.
The Holtwood Campground in Oconto is pretty decent. Though there’s a freight train that comes through town late at night and another one early in the am. It’s like that scene from ‘My Cousin Vinny’ where he jumps out of bed and yells ‘what the fuck was that!’. Then there’s the highway and the semis. But otherwise it seems pretty well run and well laid out.
Part of my ambition is to manage on under $10 per day on the road, and as I’ve already explained, this will involve ‘stealth camping’. Stealth camping is when it goes dark and you camp in some sucker’s yard without them knowing. The idea is that it’s cheap. If you can gain access to their fridge then so much the better.
As I start to build a database of yards around the country I’ll be sure to post the addresses here.
I bet you can hardly wait.
